What Causes Breakouts? |
Now, what is Sebaceous Glands?
Sebaceous glands are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin. These glands are attached to your hair follicles, which are small holes in your skin from where an individual hair grows out from.
Sebaceous glands basically apply a oil like substance (lubricate) on your skin and hair which helps them from drying out. They do this by producing an oily substance known as sebum.
If sebaceous begin to produce too much oil then that's when one starts facing acne because the excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substance form a plug in the follicles.
And if the plugged follicle is close to the surface of your skin then it bulges outwards in creating a whitehead. Vice versa, if the plugged follicle gets open to the skin then it starts creating blackheads.
Now, you need to know that there are four main factors causing of acne:-
1) Excess oil (sebum) production
2) Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
3) Bacteria
4) Inflammation
Pimples are raised red spots with a white center that develops when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected with bacteria. Blockages and inflammation deep inside hair follicles produce cystlike lumps beneath the surface of your skin.
What makes your skin breakout?
1) Hormonal Changes:-
There are certain hormones like androgens that increases in boys and girls during puberty which cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. Excessive sebum can break down cellular walls in the pores, causing bacteria to grow.
2) Certain Medications:-
Certain medications includes drugs containing corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium which can cause true acne or acne like eruptions.
3) Diet:-
It is unclear what role diet plays in worsening acne. But some studies say that people who consume diet that offers good supply of vitamin A and E and zinc can lower the risk of severe acne.
4) Stress:-
Stress does not cause acne but if you already have acne then it can definitely worse them so try an reduce your stress level.
How to prevent breakouts?
1) Wash your face properly:-
Don't wash your face with harsh cleanser and if possible try an use alcohol-free cleanser. Also remember washing your face more them twice a day can make your acne worse.
Now how to wash your face:
1) Wet your face with warm water not hot water.
2) Apply a mild cleanser and gently use your fingers to massage in a circular motion for atleast a minute.
3) Rinse it properly and pat dry.
2) Moisturize:-
Moisturizing help to keep your skin hydrated. But again remember use fragrance-free moisturizer after washing your face or when your skin feels dry.
3) Stay Hydrated:-
To keep your body hydrated it really important to drink atleast 8-ounce glasses of water everyday. Drink more water after exercise, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if you spend a lot of time in hot, humid climate.
4) Limit your Make-up:-
I know you feel like using make-up to cover up your pimples but by doing so you may clog pores and tigger outbreaks. So try and go natural but if you are wearing make-up then try an avoid greasy, heavy foundation and use products that are noncomedogentic, sheer and fragrance-free.
5) Don't touch your face:-
Every time you touch your face some of those pore-clogging impurities can get transfered to your skin. So if your nose feels itchy, scratch it and then immediately wash your hands.
