What causes dark underarms?

Your underarms should naturally be of the same shade as the rest of your skin. But sometimes the skin in the armpits can turn a darker hue. Dark underarms usually aren't a sign of anything serious but again some people may find it a bit embarrassing. Dark underarms are usually a symptom of acanthosis nigricans. 

Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition characterized by area of dark, velvety discoloration in body folds and creases. The affected skin can become thickened and mostly it affects your armpits, groin and neck. 

Skin changes are the only sign of acanthosis nigricans. Acanthosis nigricans is linked with obesity and diabetes but in very rare cases it may occur in people who have certain cancers. 

Now again some people experience these skin changes on one side of their body only. This is called unilateral acanthosis nigricans. 

Does sweat causes dark underarms?

Dark underarms are caused due to several factors as the skin there is quite sensitive. And sensitive skin can lead to many problems like rashes and pigmentation. Dark underarms can be caused due to excessive dead cell accumulation, increased shaving, too much sweating, using wrong perfumes or deodorants, etc. 


Causes of dark underarms:-

1) Dark underarms is generally caused due to skin condition acanthosis nigricans.

2) There are certain chemical irritants in deodorants and perfumes which can cause dark underarms.

3) Excessive shaving can lead to discoloration or pigmentation of the underarms. And sometimes it may also lead to inflammation of your skin.

4) Too much accumulation of dead skin cell on underarms can darken your skin.

5) Hormonal disorder such as PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or thyroid can cause dark underarms.

6) Taking certain medications like birth control pills, insulin, growth hormone, etc may cause dark underarms.

7) Wearing too tight clothes may at times cause friction which can often lead to dark underarms.

8) People with dark skin tone have more melanin in their body due to which they are more prone to darker underarms.

Precautions:-

1) Prefer waxing over shaving.

2) Exfoliate your skin as much as you can.

3) Avoid smoking.

4) Prefer wearing loose fitting clothes.

5) Moisturise your underarms as it may reduce irritation of your underarms.

6) Maintain a proper and healthy weight.

Home remedies to lighten underarms naturally

1) POTATO:-  Grate a potato and squeeze the juice from the grated potato. Apply the juice to your underarms and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse it with cool water.

2) LEMON:- Cut thick slices of lemon and rub the slices on your underarms. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse it with cool water, pat dry and apply moisturiser. 

3) TEA TREE OIL:- Mix 5 drops of tea tree oil with 8 ounces of water in a small spray bottle. Spray it on your underarms and let it dry naturally. Spray it everyday before taking a shower.
