What causes stretch marks?


Stretch marks are indented streaks that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks or other places on the body. They're most common in pregnant women especially during the last trimester. The cause of stretch marks is stretching of the skin. Their severity is affected due to several factors which includes your genetics and the degree of stress on the skin. 

Your level of the hormone cortisol also might play a important role. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are small structures attached to the top of each kidney. The human body has two adrenal glands that release chemicals called hormones into the bloodstream. 

Now, many women experience stretch marks during pregnancy as the skin stretches in numerous ways to make room for baby to develop. This continual tugging and stretching can cause stretch marks. Similarly stretch marks sometimes appear due to rapid gain or lose of weight. Some teenagers may also notice stretch marks after a sudden growth spurt. 

What are the types of stretch marks?


Stretch marks typically appear as bands of parallel lines on your skin. These lines are of different color and texture than your normal skin. And they range from purple to bright pink to light gray. If you touch your stretch marks with your fingers then you might feel a slight ridge or indentation on your skin and sometimes they might also feel a bit itchy or sore. 

Stretch marks are often a pinkish, purple or red in color when they first form. But over a period of time they typically fade to a paler or whiter color. 

Now, there are different types of stretch marks:-

1) Striae Atrophica:- 
               They are very common form of stretch marks. The breakdowm of elastin or collagen components in the skin causes striae atrophica.

2) Striae Distensae:-
               They typically involve linear lines that may look like stripes. And it most often appear during puberty. 

3) Striae Gravidarum:-
               It only occurs during pregnancy.

4) Vergetures:-
                These are long, specifically patterned stretch marks that resembles a whip's lashings. 

How to get rid of stretch marks naturally at home?

1) Argan Oil:-
            Argan oil is enriched with vitamin E which helps to increase the elasticity of the skin and rubbing it on your stretch marks can help you heal the broken tissues which will gradually lighten your stretch marks.

2) Apricots:-
               Take 2-3 apricots and remove the seeds from it. Grind it to form a smooth paste. Apply it directly on your stretch marks and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse it with lukewarm water.

3) Black Tea:-
           Black tea is very rich in minerals and vitamin and it also includes B12 which helps to control skin pigmentation. Boil a couple of tbsp of black tea and add some salt to it. Let it cool down for a while then apply it directly on your stretch marks. Repeat it every single day for better results.
