What causes pigmentation? |
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their color. There are a number of factors that can trigger an increase in melanin production. But the main and the most common ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and some skin injuries or inflammation.
Is pigmentation harmful?
Hyperpigmentation usually isn't harmful, it can be a symptom of another medical condition. But again usually it isn't a sign of some serious medical condition. In some cases, dark areas will fade on their own by just applying a really good SPF (sun protection) whereas in other cases, you might need more aggressive treatment.
Which pigment may have effects of skin pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation affects the color of your skin. Your skin gets color from a pigment called melanin. There are special cells in the skin that make melanin. When these cells get damaged or become unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Some pigmentation disorder affects just the patches of your skin. And some affect your entire body. If your body makes too much melanin, your skin gets darker. If your body makes too little melanin, your skin gets lighter.
Types of skin pigmentation disorders:-
ALBINISM:-
Albinism is caused due to absences of the pigment melanin. Albinism is a genetic condition affecting a person's skin. A person with albinism may have no color, it's lighter than normal skin color or patchy missing skin color. Albinos have an abnormal gene that restricts the production of melanin. There is no cure for albinism.
MELASMA:-
Melasma is also known as chloasma is marked by tan or brown patches that may appear on your forehead, cheeks, upper lips, nose and chin. Although this condition is often called the "pregnancy mask", men can also develop it. It may also occur in women who are taking birth control pills or postmenopausal estrogen. Melasma may go away after pregnancy, but if it remains can consult your dermatologist. Also, remember if you have melasma, don't forget to use a sunscreen.
VITILIGO:-
Vitiligo is a condition where the body's immune system attacks pigment cells (melanocytes), which causes pigment loss. Vitiligo causes smooth white patches usually around your mouth and eyes or on the back of your hands. In some people, these patches can appear all over the body. There is no cure for vitiligo.
